How loud is your road?

About:

Noise can cause annoyance, interrupt conversation, disturb sleep and, in extreme conditions, cause physical damage to those affected. The types of noise that are experienced can be classified into some fairly broad categories. For example, occupational noise which is experienced at work, neighbour or neighbourhood noise and environmental (aka ambient) noise caused by transport and industry.

The National Ambient Noise Strategy

In early 2002, the government undertook a consultation on its proposal, announced in the Rural White Paper 2000 to develop an Ambient Noise Strategy in England. The strategy is due to be developed by 2007.

Noise Mapping England Project

The Noise Mapping England Project is part of the first stage of the development of the National Ambient Noise Strategy (NANS). It also addresses the requirements of the Rural White Paper.

The project aims to gather information on the ambient noise climate in England. In simple terms, this means determining the number of people affected by different levels of ambient noise, the source of that noise (i.e. road, rail, air and industry) and the locations of the people affected. Noise can be assessed in a number of ways and we have chosen to carry out this noise assessment project through noise mapping.

The objectives of the Noise Mapping England Project are:

* To calculate noise levels and produce noise maps across England which determine noise exposure data, identify relatively quiet areas and noise 'hotspots' and provide information to assess the relationship between noise and other policy areas.
* To use the information obtained to help develop the National Ambient Noise Strategy
* To gain knowledge which will assist in the implementation of the Environmental Noise Directive, e.g. on the location, acquisition and accuracy of input data.

London Road Traffic Noise Map

Maps have been created to provide information on the levels of road traffic noise across the whole of the Greater London area. Other types of noise will be covered by projects that are being planned or progressed at present.
